UPSC Mains 2023 GS1 Q2: Gandhi vs. Tagore — Education and Nationalism

Gandhi and Tagore admired each other deeply. Yet they held real differences over education’s purpose and nationalism’s proper form.

Gandhi’s Basic Education, proposed in 1937, centred on a productive craft, self-reliance, and teaching in the mother tongue.

Tagore’s Santiniketan model favoured open-air, universal, arts-and-nature-centred learning. It stayed free from rigid classroom discipline.

Gandhi’s education model served the freedom movement’s immediate needs. It aimed at rural self-reliance and mass participation.

Tagore worried that narrow nationalism could turn destructive. He favoured a cosmopolitan, world-university outlook instead.

Tagore publicly criticised the Non-Cooperation Movement’s bonfires of foreign cloth. He called the act wasteful and needlessly coercive.

Both men rejected the British system’s rote, exam-centred schooling. Neither thought it suited India’s real needs.

Gandhi called Tagore “Gurudev,” meaning revered teacher. Tagore is widely credited with first calling Gandhi “Mahatma.”

Gandhi saw boycott and self-sufficiency as morally necessary tools. Tagore feared such methods could breed intolerance instead.

Nai Talim shaped independent India’s early Basic Education policy. Visva-Bharati became a central university in 1951, a decade after Tagore’s death.

Contrast education philosophy — craft and self-reliance versus universal and artistic learning. Contrast nationalism — practical and immediate versus cosmopolitan and cautious. Cite the 1921 cloth-burning dispute as the clearest flashpoint between the two.
