How are the fjords formed? Why do they constitute some of the most picturesque areas of the world?
1. Define a fjord
A fjord is a long, narrow, deep inlet of the sea with steep rock walls. It forms in mountainous coastal regions at high latitudes.
2. Step 1: glacial carving
During past ice ages, glaciers flowed through existing river valleys. Glacial erosion cuts far deeper and wider than a river ever could, leaving a deep U-shaped trough.
3. Step 2: post-glacial flooding
As the ice melted and sea levels rose after the ice age, seawater flooded these deep troughs. This flooding is what actually turns a glacial trough into a fjord.
4. The sill at the mouth
Many fjords carry a shallow underwater ridge, called a sill, at their mouth. It marks where the glacier’s erosive power weakened, or where it dropped debris.
5. Why they run so deep inland
A fjord’s floor often lies well below sea level, sometimes deeper than the open sea outside it. This is the clearest sign the inlet was carved by ice, not by a river alone.
6. Where fjords occur
Fjords occur only in formerly glaciated, high-latitude coastlines: Norway, New Zealand, Chile, Alaska, Greenland, and British Columbia in Canada.
7. Sheer walls create the scenery
Glacially-carved rock walls often rise over 1,000 m straight from the water. This vertical relief, next to calm deep water, is the main reason fjords photograph so dramatically.
8. Hanging valleys feed waterfalls
Where a small tributary glacier met a larger trunk glacier, the trunk glacier cut its valley far deeper. This leaves the tributary valley ‘hanging,’ so its stream now falls as a waterfall into the fjord.
9. A fjord vs a ria
A ria is a drowned river valley, formed only by rising sea levels with no glacial carving. Rias are shallower and more V-shaped, since ice never deepened them.
10. Norway’s Sognefjord as the benchmark
Sognefjord, Norway’s longest and deepest fjord, runs about 205 km inland and exceeds 1,300 m in depth. It anchors most discussions of fjord scale.

Norway’s Geirangerfjord and Nærøyfjord form part of the West Norwegian Fjords UNESCO World Heritage Site, reflecting both their scientific and scenic value.
