The Climate and Clean Air Coalition sounds like a G20 project. It was actually founded by six countries and one UN agency, none of them a G20 body.

🏛️ Must Know
What the CCAC Actually Is
- Not a G20 Initiative The Climate and Clean Air Coalition was founded in 2012. Its founders were Bangladesh, Canada, Ghana, Mexico, Sweden, the United States, and UNEP, not the G20.
- A Voluntary Partnership The CCAC today includes over 200 governments and organizations working together on a voluntary basis, convened within UNEP.
- Targets Three Pollutants The coalition specifically focuses on methane, black carbon, and hydrofluorocarbons, the main short-lived climate pollutants.
- Only One Statement Is Correct The pollutant-focus claim is correct. The G20-origin claim is false.

Why Short-Lived Pollutants Matter
- Short-Lived but Powerful Methane, black carbon, and HFCs stay in the atmosphere for a much shorter time than CO₂. Yet each one warms the climate far more strongly per unit.
- Ambitious Targets The CCAC aims to cut methane by at least 40% and black carbon by up to 70%, both by 2030. It also targets a 99.5% HFC cut by 2050. All figures are against 2010 levels.
- Health Co-Benefits Cutting black carbon and tropospheric ozone also improves air quality, giving the coalition health benefits beyond climate benefits.

How the CCAC Fits the Bigger Climate Picture
- A Complement to Paris The CCAC works alongside the Paris Agreement, targeting fast climate wins that slower CO₂ cuts cannot deliver alone.
- India’s Own Coalition Links India engages with short-lived pollutant reduction through its own methane and black carbon initiatives, separate from formal CCAC membership.
- Connects to Other PYQ Facts HFCs, one of the CCAC’s three target pollutants, are also the substances covered by the Montreal Protocol’s Kigali Amendment.
