G7 and UN Security Council Basics Good to Know
- The G7 is a forum of seven major economies: the US, UK, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, and Canada. The European Union also takes part. It has no permanent secretariat; each member hosts on rotation.
- The UN Security Council has 15 members. Five are permanent members with veto power: the US, UK, France, Russia, and China. The other 10 are non-permanent members, elected for two-year terms by the UN General Assembly.
- India has now attended the G7 Summit 13 times overall, and 7 years in a row, as an invited guest. India is not a G7 member itself.

Reading Between the Headlines Great to Know
- Burnham’s rise shows how quickly a parliamentary system can replace a sitting Prime Minister. He never won a general election as party leader. He simply won an internal party contest, unopposed, after Starmer resigned.
- The US-Iran breakdown is a reminder that a signed memorandum is not the same as a lasting peace. Both sides had already broken earlier truce terms before the formal MoU was even signed.
- Kyrgyzstan’s first-ever UN Security Council seat shows that Council membership still has real gaps. Some UN member states have never held a seat, even decades after independence.
