India was under British colonial rule for nearly two centuries.
India gained independence on 15 August 1947.
India stayed in the Commonwealth as a republic, after the 1949 London Declaration allowed this.
India and the UK signed a Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement, called CETA, on 24 July 2025.

CETA came into force on 15 July 2026, nearly a year after it was signed.
Once in force, CETA made roughly 99% of Indian goods duty-free in the UK.
CETA was signed at Chequers during PM Modi’s July 2025 visit, covered in IntlRel0025 — PM Modi’s Foreign Visits.
During that same visit, PM Modi met King Charles III at Sandringham, and a “Vision 2035” roadmap was released.
In 2021, India and the UK launched the “Roadmap 2030,” a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.
This partnership covers defense and security cooperation, including intelligence-sharing and Indo-Pacific coordination.
The UK is home to a large Indian diaspora, around 1.86 million people per the 2021 Census.

As of 20 July 2026, Andy Burnham is UK Prime Minister, relevant to who currently leads the UK side of this bilateral relationship.
He succeeded Keir Starmer, who resigned on 22 June 2026 under internal Labour Party pressure over the economy and immigration.
Burnham, then Mayor of Greater Manchester, had won the Makerfield by-election on 18 June 2026, entering the House of Commons as an MP.
The Labour leadership contest ran from 9 to 16 July 2026, and Burnham was elected unopposed.
Burnham became Labour Party leader on 17 July 2026, and Prime Minister on 20 July 2026.
Before Manchester, Burnham was a 16-year Labour MP and a Cabinet minister under PMs Tony Blair and Gordon Brown.
On 15 July 2026, the India-UK CETA formally came into force, making roughly 99% of Indian goods duty-free in the UK.
On 24 July 2025, India and the UK had signed CETA at Chequers during PM Modi’s visit.
The same day, the India-UK Agreement on Social Security also came into force, alongside CETA.
It exempts Indian professionals on temporary UK assignments from double social security contributions, for up to five years.
A formal ceremony marked the moment at Vanijya Bhawan, New Delhi, attended by British High Commissioner Lindy Cameron.
On Day One, over 50 export consignments left India under CETA’s preferential tariffs, worth over USD 140 million.

24 June 2026: Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal announced an official visit to London, from 25 to 27 June 2026, ahead of CETA and the DCC entering force.
- He held a bilateral meeting with UK Business and Trade Secretary Peter Kyle, on regulatory roadmaps and customs coordination for CETA implementation.
- Goyal addressed the India Global Forum, on the theme “Capital, Innovation and the UK-India Moment,” and met executives from HSBC, Rolls-Royce, Tata, and other firms.
- The visit supported India’s target of USD 120 billion in bilateral trade with the UK by 2030.
