Border Security Force (BSF)

Before 1965, India guarded its borders with ordinary state police battalions. One attack in the Kutch desert showed how badly that worked. This article covers the force India built in response.

Core mandate

• BSF is one of the Central Armed Police Forces, surveyed together in Central Armed Police Forces of India.
• Its core mandate is guarding India’s land border in peacetime.
• It works mainly along the Pakistan and Bangladesh frontiers.
• That covers roughly 2,290 km of the Pakistan border and 4,097 km facing Bangladesh.
• Around 193 battalions and 1,760 border outposts hold the line.
• Over 1,000 km stays unfenced, where rivers or dense jungle make fencing impractical.

Size and structure

• BSF is widely described as the world’s largest border-guarding force.
• Beyond ground units, it runs an air wing, a marine (water) wing, commando units and artillery regiments.

The Camel Contingent

• The BSF Camel Contingent is based in Jaisalmer, Rajasthan.
• It uses Jaisalmeri camels, prized for endurance.
• BSF is the only Indian force that uses camels for both operational patrols and ceremonial duties.
• The camels patrol the Thar Desert stretch of the India-Pakistan border, where wheeled vehicles struggle.

Home Ministry in peace, Army in war

• BSF is often assumed to sit under the Ministry of Defence, since it guards borders.
• It falls under the Ministry of Home Affairs, like every other Central Armed Police Force.
• In wartime, BSF units can be placed under the Indian Army’s operational control.
• They hold quieter sectors so the Army can concentrate where fighting is heaviest.

Great to Know

Built after a failure

• BSF was created only after the Sardar Post attack.
• Institutions are often built in response to a demonstrated failure, not ahead of one.

Old traditions folded in

• Absorbing the Bikaner Camel Corps, instead of disbanding it, shows something about independent India.
• Older princely-state military traditions were folded into new national institutions.

Terrain that demands different tools

• Separate air, water and camel wings reflect India’s varied border terrain.
• No single doctrine could cover a desert frontier and a riverine one equally well.

Current Affairs

One officer heads both ITBP and BSF

• On 1 December 2025, Praveen Kumar, chief of the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP), took additional charge as Director General of BSF. (Source: ANI.)
• He succeeded Daljit Singh Chaudhary, who retired on 30 November 2025.
• One officer now oversees India’s Himalayan border with China and its western and eastern borders with Pakistan and Bangladesh at once.
