• Nambi Narayanan led ISRO’s cryogenic rocket-engine project, central to India’s GSLV launch vehicle programme.
• In November 1994, he was arrested along with ISRO deputy director D. Sasikumaran and others. They were accused of espionage, allegedly passing secret rocket-engine drawings to Pakistan.
• The case originated from the arrest of a Maldivian national, Mariam Rasheeda, in October 1994, on suspicion of acquiring the drawings.
• In 1996, the CBI submitted a closure report. It found the espionage allegations unproven and false, and the court discharged all the accused.
• Narayanan was formally acquitted, with the case fully closed by 1998.

• In 2018, the Supreme Court, in a bench led by then Chief Justice Dipak Misra, ruled the case against Narayanan had been concocted.
• The Court awarded him ₹50 lakh in compensation, for what it called unnecessary arrest, harassment, and mental cruelty.
• The Court also ordered a committee, headed by retired Supreme Court judge D.K. Jain, to investigate the role of the Kerala police officials involved.
• In 2020, the Kerala government paid Narayanan an additional ₹1.3 crore in compensation and solatium.
• In 2019, President Ram Nath Kovind conferred the Padma Bhushan, India’s third-highest civilian award, on Narayanan.

• His life was dramatised in “Rocketry: The Nambi Effect” (2022), written, produced, directed by, and starring R. Madhavan. The film premiered at the Cannes Film Festival’s Marché du Film, on 19 May 2022, with both Madhavan and Narayanan in attendance.
