India has climbed 18 places in the UN’s global sustainability rankings since 2015 — its best position ever. Only a third of its own 2030 targets are actually on track to be met. This article covers sustainable development: where the idea comes from, and how India is doing against it.

Regional Standing and Target Progress
- Region Despite this rise, India still trails South Asian neighbours Bhutan, Maldives, Nepal, and Sri Lanka in the same rankings.
- On track Only 33.3% of India’s SDG targets are projected to be met by 2030. 42.7% show limited progress, and 24% are actually deteriorating.
NITI Aayog’s SDG India Index
- Domestic Domestically, NITI Aayog‘s SDG India Index tracks the same 16 goals across states. Its composite score rose from 57 in 2018 to 71 in 2023-24.
- States Among India’s states, Uttarakhand and Kerala lead with a score of 79. Bihar scores lowest, at 57.

🌟 Great to Know
Two Rankings, Two Different Stories
- Contrast Two rankings tell two different stories. India’s global position keeps improving year over year. But the on-track share of its own targets is barely a third. Improvement and adequacy aren’t the same thing.
- Definition The Brundtland definition is deliberately broad. It sets no specific targets or dates. The 2015 SDGs added both, turning a general principle into 17 measurable goals.
State Variation and the Wider Framework
- States State-level variation, from 79 down to 57, shows India’s SDG story isn’t really one story. Progress concentrates in some states, while others lag well behind.
- Framework Sustainable development is the umbrella idea behind India’s wider environment framework. See EnvEco0002 — Climate Change, EIA and Renewable Energy and EnvEco0003 — India’s Conservation Framework for how it plays out in practice.
