Must KnowSeven Neighbours, Three of Them Central Asian
- As per the Government of India, Afghanistan borders seven countries. They are Pakistan, Iran, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, China, and India.
- India shares a 106 km border with Afghanistan. It runs along the Wakhan Corridor, from Gilgit-Baltistan in the UT of Ladakh.
- Pakistan occupies Gilgit-Baltistan illegally. So most world maps show only six neighbours and leave India out.
- Among Central Asian countries specifically, only Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, and Tajikistan touch Afghanistan, the same kind of precise border-count question tested throughout World’s Longest International Borders.
- Kyrgyzstan, a Central Asian state, does not border Afghanistan. Azerbaijan, in the Caucasus, does not either.
- The border with China is short, just 76 km, running through the narrow Wakhan Corridor in Afghanistan’s northeast.

- At roughly 2,640 km, the Durand Line is shorter than the Radcliffe Line, the 3,223 km India-Pakistan border drawn in 1947.
Q3. True or False: The Durand Line is the border demarcation separating Afghanistan and Pakistan.
Q4. True or False: The Durand Line, at about 2,640 km, is longer than the Radcliffe Line.
A Central Asian Neighbour in the News
Good to KnowUzbekistan’s World Cup First
- Uzbekistan, one of Afghanistan’s three Central Asian neighbours, qualified for its first-ever FIFA World Cup in 2026.
- That made Uzbekistan the first-ever Central Asian country to reach the tournament, a milestone as notable as the border-count trivia tested around Ukraine.
Q5. True or False: Uzbekistan became the first-ever Central Asian country to qualify for a FIFA World Cup.
Think it through, before reading on. Kyrgyzstan is a Central Asian state. Azerbaijan is often lumped in with the same region. Why don’t they border Afghanistan too?
Show the explanation
Shared region does not mean shared border. Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, and Tajikistan all sit directly along Afghanistan’s northern edge, so their borders are real and continuous. Kyrgyzstan sits further northeast, separated from Afghanistan by Tajikistan’s own territory, including the narrow Wakhan Corridor’s neighbourhood. Azerbaijan sits far to the west, across the Caspian Sea and other countries entirely. Exam-setters group all five countries together precisely because test-takers assume regional closeness implies a shared border, when only three of the five actually have one.
Remember the trap. Only Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, and Tajikistan border Afghanistan among Central Asian states. Azerbaijan and Kyrgyzstan do not.
