What an air mass is
  • An air mass is a large body of air with fairly uniform temperature and humidity. It forms by sitting over one region long enough to take on that region’s characteristics.
What makes a good source region
  • A source region needs a large, flat, uniform surface and light, stable winds. Oceans and vast plains work well; broken, mountainous terrain does not.
The Bergeron classification
  • Air masses are classified with two letters. A lowercase letter marks moisture: c for continental (dry) or m for maritime (moist). An uppercase letter marks source latitude: Arctic, Polar, Tropical, or Equatorial.
Air masses move and change
  • Once formed, an air mass moves away from its source region under prevailing winds. As it travels, it gradually warms, cools, or gains and loses moisture, a process called modification.

Continental polar (cP)
  • Continental polar air is cold and dry, forming over high-latitude landmasses like Siberia and northern Canada. It brings sharp winter cold snaps to the regions it reaches.
Maritime tropical (mT)
  • Maritime tropical air is warm and moist, forming over tropical oceans like the Gulf of Mexico and the Bay of Bengal. It is the main moisture source behind many regional monsoon and rainy seasons.
Continental tropical (cT)
  • Continental tropical air is hot and dry, forming over subtropical deserts like the Sahara. It typically brings heat waves rather than rainfall wherever it dominates.
Fronts form where air masses meet
  • A front is the boundary zone between two different air masses. Cold fronts, warm fronts, and occluded fronts each produce a distinct weather pattern as one air mass displaces another.
