Water in the Atmosphere

Dew and frost form the same way — the only difference is whether the dew point sits above or below freezing.

Absolute vs Relative Humidity
  • Absolute HumidityThis is the actual weight of water vapour per unit volume of air, expressed in grams per cubic metre.(NCERT Class 11)
  • Relative HumidityThis is the percentage of moisture present compared to the air’s full capacity at that temperature. It’s higher over oceans and lowest over continents.(NCERT Class 11)
  • Saturation and Dew PointAir holding moisture to its full capacity is saturated. The temperature at which saturation occurs is the dew point.(NCERT Class 11)
Evaporation and Condensation
  • EvaporationHeat transforms liquid water into vapour. More air movement means faster evaporation, since it replaces saturated air with unsaturated air.(NCERT Class 11)
  • CondensationLoss of heat transforms water vapour back into liquid. Direct conversion to solid form instead is called sublimation.(NCERT Class 11)
  • Hygroscopic NucleiCondensation in free air happens around tiny particles of dust, smoke and ocean salt, which readily absorb water.(NCERT Class 11)
Dew, Frost, Fog and Mist
  • DewWater droplets form on cool solid surfaces like grass or stone, and require a dew point above freezing.(NCERT Class 11)
  • FrostThis forms under the same conditions as dew, except the dew point sits at or below freezing, so ice crystals form instead of droplets.(NCERT Class 11)
  • Fog, Mist and SmogFog is essentially a cloud with its base near the ground. Mist carries more moisture per nucleus than fog, and fog mixed with smoke becomes smog.(NCERT Class 11)
Four Basic Cloud Types
  • CirrusThese thin, feathery, white clouds form highest, at 8,000-12,000 m.(NCERT Class 11)
  • CumulusThese cotton-wool-like patches form at 4,000-7,000 m with a flat base.(NCERT Class 11)
  • Stratus and NimbusStratus clouds layer widely across the sky. Nimbus clouds are dark, dense, low-lying, and produce precipitation.(NCERT Class 11)
  • Combined TypesThese four combine into named types like cirrocumulus, altostratus, stratocumulus, and cumulonimbus.(NCERT Class 11)

Rain, Snow, Sleet and Hail
  • Rain and SnowPrecipitation as liquid water is rainfall. Below 0°C, it falls as hexagonal-crystal snowflakes instead.(NCERT Class 11)
  • SleetThis is frozen raindrops or refrozen melted snow-water, forming when a warmer air layer overlies a subfreezing layer near the ground.(NCERT Class 11)
  • HailRaindrops passing through colder layers solidify into small, rounded pieces of ice with concentric layers.(NCERT Class 11)
Three Types of Rainfall
  • Convectional RainHeated air rises, expands, cools and condenses into cumulus clouds, bringing brief but heavy rain common in the equatorial belt.(NCERT Class 11)
  • Orographic RainAir forced up a mountain cools and condenses, so windward slopes get heavy rain while leeward slopes stay dry.(NCERT Class 11)
  • Rain-Shadow AreasThe dry leeward zone behind a mountain range is called a rain-shadow area. Interior Maharashtra, behind the Western Ghats, is a real example.(NCERT Class 11)
  • Cyclonic RainThis third type comes from the fronts and rising air of cyclonic weather systems.(NCERT Class 11)
