- A Spider, Not a CrustaceanThe Peacock tarantula (Gooty tarantula), scientific name Poecilotheria metallica, is a spider (an arachnid), not an omnivorous crustacean.
- Endemic to a Narrow RangeIts natural habitat in India is limited to only a small area of forest around Gooty, Andhra Pradesh, making it highly vulnerable to habitat loss.

A Species Under Pressure
- First RecordedThe species was first recorded near Gooty, Andhra Pradesh, in 1899. It is the only blue-coloured species in its genus, Poecilotheria.
- Where It SurvivesWild populations are now mainly found in the Nandyal and Giddalur forest divisions, and parts of the Seshachalam hills, in southern Andhra Pradesh.
- Sapphire ColouringIts striking metallic-blue colouration gave it the name “Gooty Sapphire Ornamental Tarantula” among exotic-pet collectors, driving illegal trade pressure on wild populations.
- Old-Growth DependentThe species depends on crevices in old-growth trees, often 150 to 1,000-plus years old, so logging and firewood harvesting are major threats.
- Captive BreedingBecause wild habitat keeps shrinking, captive breeding programmes are considered essential to the species’ long-term survival.
